It also prevents leaks that can rust a hole in your heat exchanger, allowing furnace exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide into your home's air supply.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for humidifier cleaning. If you're uncomfortable cleaning the humidifier yourself, call for service.
Steps
1.Shut off the water supply valve.
2.Check the supply line and connections for leaks or damage that might block the water flow. If you see any, call for service.
3.Visually inspect the humidifier for leaks or overflow: ◦If it is leaking, call for service.
- If it is overflowing, clean the humidifier, run it and see if it still overflows. If so, call for service.
- If you see signs of past leaks or overflow water stains or rust on the humidifier or the furnace clean the humidifier, run it for 24 hours and look for leaks or overflow. If you see either, turn it off and call for service.
- Drum humidifiers usually must be emptied manually. Follow the instructions in the owner’s manual.
6.After you clean and reinstall all parts, turn the water back on.
7.Check whether the drum rotates or the valve opens when you turn up the dial that sets the humidity level. If not, call for service.
