Bring fresh air into the house, Improving the air quality in your home can be as simple as cleaning the filters on your heat recovery ventilator. Heat recovery ventilators are air-purifying and energy-saving
devices attached to some furnaces.
During the heating season, they bring fresh air into the house; to save energy, they use the warmth in the stale air it blows from the house to heat the fresh air it brings in.
The filter keeps dust and debris from clogging the delicate components that handle the transfer.
After you remove the filters from your heat recovery ventilator, you either clean them or replace them it depends on the type of HRV you have, not how dirty the filter is. When installing the new or cleaned filters, look for arrows printed on each filter and point them towards the inside of the heat recovery ventilator when you install the filters.
Steps
- Open the cabinet and find two filters: an intake filter on the side closest to the exterior wall that collects airborne debris from the fresh air piped in, and an exhaust filter on the interior side of the cabinet that protects the unit from the dust in your home.
- Remove and visually inspect the filters. If they look dirty, clean or replace them.
- If your filters are replaceable, remove the old filters from the unit and replace with the new filters.
- If your filters can be cleaned, remove the filters, vacuum them to remove dust, wash them in warm, soapy water, let them dry and then return them to the heat recovery ventilator.
